What was meant to be a moment of historic pride for cricket fans turned into a horrifying tragedy. A massive crowd surge outside Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on Tuesday evening led to a deadly RCB stampede, killing at least 11 people and injuring over 50 others.
The event was organized by Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) to celebrate their first-ever IPL title victory. The celebration, however, spiraled into chaos due to massive overcrowding, mismanagement, and a critical lack of security coordination.
What Triggered the RCB Stampede?
The RCB team, fresh off their IPL 2025 win, had invited fans to gather at the iconic Chinnaswamy Stadium to celebrate the long-awaited title. The announcement, made through social media just a few hours prior, quickly went viral — leading to an unexpected crowd of more than 200,000 people descending on the venue, which can accommodate only 35,000.
While the team had planned for a celebratory parade and public address, the lack of crowd control measures, barricading, and emergency protocols led to severe mismanagement as the gates opened.
According to eyewitnesses and police sources, the stampede occurred when a large section of fans attempted to push through a narrow entrance near Gate 2, hoping to catch a glimpse of the players. The crowd swell, combined with limited exits and no real-time monitoring, created a deadly bottleneck. Several individuals, including women and children, were crushed in the chaos.
Ground Realities: Eyewitness and Survivor Accounts
“There was no space to breathe. People were pushing from behind, and suddenly I saw people falling. I lost my younger brother in the crowd,” said Rahul M., a 19-year-old student who had come to attend the event.
Videos circulated on social media show people crying for help, ambulances stuck in unmoving crowds, and volunteers attempting to pull bodies out from the crushed mass of fans near the main entrance.
The victims were rushed to Bowring Hospital, Vydehi Multispecialty Hospital, and Victoria Hospital, where at least 11 were declared dead on arrival. Many others are reportedly in critical condition.
Political and Public Reactions
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah called the tragedy “deeply disturbing” and promised strict action against those responsible for the failed arrangements. “This incident could have been avoided with better planning. We will not spare anyone found guilty of negligence,” he stated during a press briefing.
The state government has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the RCB stampede and asked for a detailed report within 72 hours.
Home Minister Dr. G. Parameshwara acknowledged the administrative failure and said that the Bengaluru police were not informed in advance about the scale of the event. “The crowd estimate shared was far lower than what actually arrived,” he said.
RCB and BCCI Issue Statements
In a late-night statement, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru franchise said, “We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of lives during what was meant to be a joyous occasion for our fans. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims. We are fully cooperating with the authorities in their investigation.”
BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia criticized the lack of coordination between the IPL franchise and civic bodies. “Large-scale events involving tens of thousands of people need city-level planning, not just enthusiasm. This should never happen again,” he added.
The planned victory parade and post-event fan interaction have been canceled in the wake of the incident.

The tragedy has left a deep scar on the city. Families are mourning young lives lost due to mismanagement and crowd frenzy. Among the deceased were college students, working professionals, and at least two minors, according to hospital authorities.
Social media has erupted with criticism of the franchise and the state administration for failing to ensure safety.
“This wasn’t just a stampede; it was negligence,” posted one user on X (formerly Twitter), calling for criminal cases against the event organizers.
